Martha Lucile Shells Varner
Mrs. Martha “Lucile” Shells Varner, 96, answered God’s call on Sunday, May 29, 2022. She was born on May 28, 1926 to the late Mr. William (Gennie Reece) Shells and Mrs. Hester Linder Shells. Mrs. Varner was a native of Pauline, South Carolina.
At an early age, Lucile began her Christian walk at Chestnut Ridge A.M.E Zion Church, Shiloh Baptist Church and Golden Street Baptist Church where she served faithfully as a Sunday School Teacher, Deaconess and Choir Member. She thoroughly enjoyed her time of service and fellowship there. Lucille was a former member of Celeste Chapter #159 Order of Eastern Star. She retired from The South Carolina School for Deaf and Blind, where she served diligently for 45 years.
Lucile enjoyed her life to the fullest and had a keen-eye for fashion especially her love for high heels shoes. She enjoyed shopping, reminiscing, working outdoors, humming and signing. She was a great cook and would often be found eating her favorites: fish, chicken, bologna, vanilla wafers and peppermint candies. While Lucile cherished her family dearly, she had a special fondness for dogs, she owned over 15 dogs during her lifetime.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Andrew Varner; her step-son, Walter Andrew Varner; her 17 siblings, Elizabeth, Johnnie, Jesse, Arthur Lee, Edgar, Edward, Odell, Altonia, Annie, Fannie, Lannie, Nelson, William, Helen, Francis Mae, Arlene Shells and Ethel Haney; and her great-granddaughter, Julia “Ju Ju” Miller.
